High School Gymnastics Info - 2023-24

NOVEMBER 23, 2023

Since 1954, high school students in BC have proudly represented their schools in provincial gymnastics championships, facilitated by the BC Secondary Schools Gymnastics Association (BCSSGA) since 1982. With many schools no longer offering gymnastics in their PE curriculum, the BCSSGA is reaching out to gymnastics clubs to provide an avenue for teens to compete on behalf of their schools.

The BCSSGA aims to bridge the gap by inviting clubs to involve their teenage gymnasts in representing their schools, acknowledging the scarcity of gymnastics programs within educational institutions. Offering five levels of competition, from beginner to advanced, the championships provide a diverse platform for participants. Regional and Zone Competitions in January to early February will serve as qualifiers for the Provincial High School Championships, hosted this year by Prince George Secondary School from February 25-27, 2024.

To facilitate participation, the BCSSGA provides guidelines for clubs new to high school gymnastics, including assistance in obtaining school endorsements. Additionally, established clubs can directly engage with their local schools and access registration forms via bcssga.ca/registration.

Chair of the BC Secondary Schools Gymnastics Association, Terry Mitruk, invites clubs and schools to partake in this unique and valued experience for athletes, coaches, and teachers. For further information or inquiries, reach out to Terry Mitruk, Teacher, and Gymnastics Coach at Sutherland Secondary School or contact bcssgymnastics@gmail.com.

Attached is a letter from Terry Mitruk detailing the process and encouragement for gymnastics clubs to engage their teenage athletes in representing their schools at the upcoming championships.
