Judging Pathways

Each competitive discipline has its own pathways for judges. You can learn more about each discipline below.

MAG Judging pathway

All new MAG judges must be a minimum of 14 years old if they are a current/former athlete, 16 years old if they are not. All judges must also be registered members with Gymnastics BC in order to judge. 

    1. Entry Level Course - This course is an introduction to the basics and the first contact with Men's Artistic Gymnastics. It is a self-directed online course which takes approximately 8 hours to complete. 
      1. Following the successful completion of the course, a new judge must shadow judge on a minimum of two panels and complete an educational assessment before they are considered fully certified.
      2. This course allows Judges to Judge up to Provincial Level 3
    2. Club Level Course - This is the next step for a MAG Judge. This is a self-directed online course which takes approximated 8 hours to complete
      1. Completing this course allows judges to judge up to Provincial Level 5 and Aspire
    3. Provincial Level Course 
      1. This is a live-attendance course run on demand a minimum of once every two years, typically in the fall prior to the competition season
      2. Completing this course allows a judge to judge Execution for all levels including Senior, Junior, and Open (E). Provincial judges are also eligible to represent their zones at BC Winter Games and to represent BC at Western Canadian Championships
    4. National Level Course
      1. This is a live-attendance course run on demand a minimum of once every two years, typically in the fall prior to the competition season.
      2. Completing this course allows a judge to judge all levels. National judges are also eligible to represent BC at Canadian Championships.
    5. Brevet
      1. Brevet judges are judges which represent Canada at international competitions. National Level Judges may choose to take the FIG MAG Judging Exam in order to become a Brevet Judge
      2. Completing this course allows a judge to judge all levels and attend Elite Canada.

WAG Judging pathway

All new WAG judges must be a minimum of 15 years old. 14 year old athletes who wish to judge may also take a judging course if they provide a letter of support from their club. All judges must also be registered members with Gymnastics BC in order to judge. WAG Judging courses run between September and December every year, and can be found on our education calendar.

  1. CCP 3-5 Course - This is one of two options for an entry level course for judges. This is an 8 hour course including a practical and theory exam, and runs both virtually and in person.
    1. Following the successful completion of the course a judge may shadow as many times as they wish before completing an educational assessment.
    2. Judges must also complete a text clinic to be able to judge on Beam and Floor.
    3. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge CCP 1-5.
  2. Xcel Course - This is one of two options for an entry level course for judges. This is an 8 hour course including a practical and theory exam, and runs both virtually and in person.
    1. Following the successful completion of the course a judge may shadow as many times as they wish before completing an educational assessment.
    2. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge Xcel levels Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
  3. CCP 6-8 Course - This course can only be taken once a judge has spent a full competition season as a trained CCP 3-5 judge or Xcel Judge. This is an 8 hour course including a practical and theory exam, and runs both virtually and in person.
    1. Following the successful completion of the course a judge may shadow as many times as they wish before completing an educational assessment.
    2. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge CCP 6-8.
    3. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge at BC Winter Games
  4. CCP 9-10 Course - This course can only be taken once a judge has spent a full competition season as a trained CCP 6-8 judge. This is a 14 hour course which runs once a year over two days, and includes a practical and theory exam, and runs both virtually and in person.
    1. Following the successful completion of the course a judge may shadow as many times as they wish before completing an educational assessment.
    2. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge CCP 6-10
  5. National CCP 10 Course - This course can only be taken by candidates 21+ years old who have spent a minimum of 1 year as a Provincial 9-10 judge and who are recommended by the Women's Judging Committee. It is a two day course which runs a minimum of once per cycle.
    1. Following the successful completion of the course a judge may shadow as many times as they wish before completing an assessment.
    2. Judges may achieve a ranking of 10-1, 10-2, 10-3, or 10-4, depending on their exam results and other factors. Judges ranked 10-2 and higher are eligible at Canadians, Westerns, Easterns, and Gymnix
  6. National High Performance Course - This course can only be taken by National 10 judges who are recommended by the WJC. It is a two day course which runs a minimum of once per cycle.
    1. Judges who complete this course are eligible to judge HP Novice, Junior, and Senior in BC.

TG Judging pathway

All new TG judges must be a minimum of 16 years old, or 15 years old if they are current/former athletes. Any other 15 year old's who wish to judge may potentially take a judging course at the discretion of the BC Trampoline Gymnastics Technical Committee. All judges must also be registered members with Gymnastics BC in order to judge. TG Judging courses run between August and October every year, and can be found on our education calendar. It is strongly recommended for new judges to practice in gym prior to taking a course!

  1. P3/P4 - Judges can choose to take one of more of the entry level P3/P4 courses: Trampoline, Tumbling, and/or Double Mini Trampoline. Each discipline is its own 8 hour course and includes its own exam. Completing this course will allow you to be a Provincial 4 or Provincial 3 judge, depending on the score achieved on your exam.
    1. P4 judges may judge levels 1-4, and only judge at provincial events
    2. P3 judges may judge levels 1-4 at BC events and Western Canadian Championships
  2. P1/P2 - Judges can choose to upgrade one or more disciplines to P1 or P2 at this course. Each discipline is its own 8 hour course and includes its own exam. Completing this course will allow you to be a Provincial 1 or Provincial 2 judge, depending on the score achieved on your exam.
    1.  P2 judges may judge levels 1-4 at BC events and Western Canadian Championships
    2. P31 judges may judge levels 1-4 at BC events and Western Canadian Championships
  3. National Judge Course - Candidates who pass P1-P2 and judge at least 3 events are eligible to complete the National Judging Course. This course is delivered once every 2 years within a given FIG cycle.
    1.  A National 3 judge is eligible to judge athletes in levels 5-7 at a National Event.
    2. A National 2 judge is eligible to judge athletes in levels 5 through Junior at a National event.
    3. A National 1 judge is eligible to judge all levels at National Events.
  4. International Judging Course – Participants are required to be National 1 Level judges with experience judging at eight National Domestic Events. They are also required to be recommended by the Judge Chairperson of Canada.
  5. Intercontinental Judging Course - Candidates must be a FIG III Judge who has completed at least one cycle at the FIG level. They are also required to be recommended by the Judge Chairperson of Canada.
